AUSTIN (KXAN) — Many of Austin’s more than 400 species of birds are facing extinction due to habitat loss, overgrazing, human encroachment and climate change.
For the past several decades, Austin city officials have created a new Hall of Fame for every species of bird they have lost because they are now considered threatened in their habitats.
That new list of threatened species includes birds not protected by state law because of their size, population growth, migratory habits or ecological importance.

«The falcon population is declining because of habitat loss, fragmentation, overgrazing and we are losing the birds,» said Paul Smith, President of the Austin Raptor Association.
While Smith says some falcons are healthy, there are few birds alive where they can make their own nests. They need food.
Smith said he would like the city to start taking the most active steps that can help the birds. He told KXAN he’s met some of his counterparts in Texas who have taken part in an ongoing public-awareness campaign and have even donated their services to preserve endangered species.
But Smith wants the city to focus on helping those most vulnerable.
